LGU Daraga fleets for 100% Smoke-Free Municipality

June 23, 2011 – The Municipality of Daraga had its 1st Smoke- Free Ordinance Public Hearing last June 22, 2011 at the Sangguniang Bayan Hall, headed by the Sangguniang Bayan Committee on Laws and Committee on Health as well as the Municipal Health Office.

The hearing was participated by the managers from the business establishments of Daraga, head of schools, media and representatives from different agencies located in said municipality.

Hon. Salvador Llamasares presented the proposed Smoke- Free Ordinance and Hon. Joseph Espinas carefully ran through the ordinance section by section.

Municipal councilor Ramon Lawenko and Councilor Joey Marcellana are present during the deliberation.
Reaction from the participants and deliberation went well, with regards to the implementation of “NO SMOKING” in the municipality are overwhelming. In fact, they wanted the Ordinance to be passed as soon as possible.

In terms of the enforcement, the heads of school showed great interest in helping the municipality in implementing and enforcing the Ordinance; they suggested utilizing their school, by educating the students about the Ill effects of smoking, and the socio-economic effect of smoking to smokers.

It is expected to have this ordinance successfully passed in the municipality this year. With the leadership of the municipal council, the support of the school, the positive response of the heads of the establishments, and other stake holders this undertaking will soon be implemented.

 As local Chief executive of Daraga I strongly supports this ordinance be adapted in the municipality of Daraga and encourage everyone to support this noble purpose, according to Mayor Gerry Jaucian.
“I would like to congratulate the smoke-free advocates whose common call is to promote the safety of both non-smoker and smokers,” the official added.

Smoke- Free 1st Public Hearing in Daraga Albay

DARAGA ALBAY, June 14, 2011- The first Public Hearing on Smoke-Free in Daraga will be conducted this June 22, 2011.

This campaign is headed by Hon. Salvador “Buddy” Llamasares, SB Chairman – Commission on Health, believes that if this ordinance was successfully implemented in Legazpi City, it is not impossible to bring same ordinance in Daraga.  

The Local Health Summit held last June 2, 2011, wherein the healthy lifestyle was discussed including health hazards on cigarette smoking, inspired the participants as well as the constituents of Daraga. This was supported by the Municipal Health Office, headed by Dr. Mercy Chua. With this, they agreed that this campaign should reach their municipality.

The Smoke- Free Albay Network (SFAN) who aims to monitor and encourage the enforcers to implement the law, circulars, ordinances and resolutions on anti-smoking and assured the municipality of their support in this undertaking.

Both SFAN and the municipality of Daraga aims to promote healthy lifestyle in the community, so together they will be campaigning for a common goal- to make our environment safer to live. Bebang
